Common Ground
Common Ground was a spectacular light and sound event staged on Australia Day Weekend 2007 on the Lakes Entrance foreshore. Aboriginal communities from across GunaiKurnai country came together to reclaim their living culture and celebrate more than sixty thousand years of their history with the broader community.
For the first time in recent history, the Elders of the GunaiKurnai clans welcomed thousands of people, black and white to Tatungalung country. The artwork included neon goanna’s, fire works and a giant bamboo installation decorated with grass and painted totems of the GunaiKurnai clans. The work was bound to the footbridge using fishing rope. Catherine Larkins collaborated with Lennie Hayes, Frances Harrison, Elaine Terrick, Vincent Lamberti and Indonesian architect in residence Eko Prawoto. Common Ground was a statewide Regional Arts Victoria project directed by Ian Pidd.
